VIPER PRO

VIPER PRO traces Windows crashes to the driver or hardware at fault.

VIPER PRO collects the crash dump, Windows fault records, GPU dumps and a snapshot of the system captured at or around the time of failure. ETION, its proprietary analytics engine, decodes the stop code and its parameters and compares the installed hardware to manufacturer specifications. Each crash gets a report with the supporting data and troubleshooting steps in order.

Crash collection

VIPER PRO collects the crash artifacts available for each failure: application dumps, Windows fault records and GPU crash data. VIPER PRO reads GPU crash dumps generated by NVIDIA Nsight™ Aftermath and AMD Radeon™ GPU Detective on systems and applications those tools support.

ETION traces the fault codes across all of them and cross-analyzes the results with the PC's hardware and software to trace the fault to its source.

How it works

01

Collection

VIPER PRO monitors for crashes and saves the dump, the Windows fault records and a snapshot of the machine at the time of each crash. Original files are not moved or modified.

02

Analysis

ETION, Viper Systems' proprietary analytics engine, decodes the dump, identifies the drivers involved, correlates the events around the fault, and checks the machine against the manufacturer's specifications for its installed parts.

03

Report

Each crash receives a report with a summary, the technical detail and the corrective actions supported by the evidence collected for that failure. Each finding lists the dump data, events and specifications used to reach it.

Report contents

  • FindingThe driver, software or hardware the evidence identifies, with its evidence classification.
  • System stateThe application in focus, memory use, running processes and temperatures.
  • Out-of-specification hardwareComponents running outside manufacturer-published limits, for example a processor above its rated thermal limit or memory configured outside the manufacturer-published specification for the detected component.
  • Corrective actionsEach action lists the supporting data from the failure.

Monitoring levels

LEVEL 1

Reactive

Captures crash dumps, Windows fault records and a snapshot of the system captured at or around the time of failure. Minimal overhead.

LEVEL 2

Flight Recorder

Keeps a rolling record of temperatures, clock states, memory pressure, DPC and ISR activity and driver activity. When a crash occurs, the report includes the timeline before the crash and all Reactive data.

Deep Scan

Deep Scan collects the crashes from a selected program over a selected timeframe, analyzes them as one dataset, and identifies the conditions they share.

It also flags system changes that coincide with the crashes starting or stopping.

Libraries

VIPER PRO ships with a base library: Windows fault codes, the specifications of major-brand hardware, component behavior and bug check mechanisms. Hardware figures come from the manufacturer's published specification. Additional libraries add coverage for specific vendors and devices.

PROPRIETARY ANALYTICS ENGINE

ETION

ETION is the proprietary analytics engine developed by Viper Systems. It reads the crash dump, event logs, hardware error records, and a snapshot of the system captured at or around the time of failure. It decodes each stop code and its parameters, then resolves the machine’s hardware and drivers against its reference library. Applying defined, evidence-based rules, it produces the same result from the same data every time.

Each finding is classified by the strength of the supporting evidence. ETION correlates crash data, system state, hardware, drivers, and other captured information to determine what occurred and, where the evidence supports it, what caused it.
